Burn-in

Burn-in is a lasting ghost of an image that stays visible after the content changes, caused by the same static elements staying on screen for long periods. It mainly affects OLED and older plasma panels; LCDs can show temporary image retention instead.

Burn-in, explained

Signage is especially exposed to burn-in because the same logo, ticker or menu layout can sit in one place for months.

How to avoid it

  • Keep content moving. Rotate playlists so no element stays in exactly the same place all day.
  • Watch static elements. Logos, clocks and tickers pinned to one corner are the usual culprits.
  • Power down when closed. Scheduling screens off outside opening hours cuts wear and energy use.
  • Choose the right panel. Commercial LCD displays rated for long daily use are far less prone to permanent burn-in than consumer OLED TVs.
