Duty Cycle

A display's duty cycle is the number of hours per day it is rated to run continuously, written as 16/7 or 24/7. Consumer TVs are typically designed for a few hours a day; commercial signage displays are rated for long or continuous operation.

Running a consumer TV 18 hours a day is one of the most common, and most expensive, signage shortcuts.

Why it matters

  • Warranty. Many consumer TV warranties don’t cover commercial or extended daily use.
  • Lifespan and heat. Displays built for 24/7 use have cooling and components designed for it.
  • Software can’t change hardware limits. A signage player keeps content playing, but the panel’s rated hours still apply. Confirm them with the display supplier.
