HDMI-CEC

HDMI-CEC (Consumer Electronics Control) lets devices connected by HDMI send each other simple commands, such as power on, standby or input switching. Signage setups use it to let a media player control the screen it is plugged into.

CEC is the reason one remote can often control both a TV and a set-top box.

Why it matters

  • Power scheduling without a smart display. A media player can switch a connected screen off overnight when CEC works.
  • Inconsistent support. Brands name and implement CEC differently, and some commands don’t work across every pairing.
  • Test before rollout. Confirm the exact display and player combination on a pilot screen.

Commercial displays often offer more reliable control over RS-232 or their own signage platform instead.
