Portrait Mode

Portrait mode means running a screen vertically, taller than it is wide (usually 9:16). It suits menu boards, entrance totems, wayfinding and anything read top to bottom, and it needs content designed for the vertical format.

Portrait mode, explained

A vertical screen stands out in a space full of landscape TVs, and it mirrors how people already read phones.

Why it matters

  • Check the display. Some consumer TVs aren’t rated for vertical mounting, which can affect cooling and warranty. Commercial displays usually state portrait support.
  • Rotate in software, not just on the wall. The player must output a portrait image, or content appears sideways.
  • Design for the format. Stack information vertically: headline, image, detail, call to action.
